FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACT, 1901.
Factories.—The duties of a District Council in the case of
factories (i.e., places where mechanical power is used, and places
where certain industries as specified in Part 1, Schedule 6, of the
Act, are carried on) are limited; dealing chiefly with the provision
of escape in case of fire, and of the provision of suitable sanitary
conveniences. In the case of bakehouses there are also special
duties to be carried out.
18 visits were made to factories during 1913, and in 10
cases nuisances were dealt with and remedied.
Workshops .—The workshops in the District have been systematically inspected. At the beginning of 1913 the number of workshops and workplaces on the register was 284, and at the close 303, and are grouped as follows :—
