MEASLES—DEATHS.
16 of the deaths occurred in children under one year of age;
28 one and under two years; 22 in the age period two and under
five years; and the remaining 10 in the period five and under
15 years.
The school teachers notify me each week of children absent
from school on account of illness, and the ailment from which they
believe them to be suffering.
In this manner I was notified of 2,461 cases of Measles. As
children under five years of age are not admitted to our schools,
I have no record of the cases occurring in children under that age.
The Infant and Junior Mixed departments of two schools
were closed for a fortnight, but without much apparent benefit.
Nearly all the elementary schools of the district were affected
by the epidemic.
