Meals Provided by Caretakers.
FARMER ROAD SCHOOL.
Here the children are fed in the kitchen of the Caretaker's
cottage and they are supervised by the Caretaker's wife. She
seemed desirous of doing her best, but her efforts in the direction
of inculcating manners, &c., fell short of the standard which should
be attained.
DOWNSELL ROAD SCHOOL.
In this school the meals are taken up to each of the three
departments of the school; but as the following details serve to
illustrate (except in the Girls' department), no adequate provision
exists for the proper service of the meals.
Boys' Department.
In this department I found a table improvised out of a blackboard
placed on a coal bunker. At this dining-table the boys
stood to eat their food.
Girls' Department.
Only three girls were on the feeding list. I found them comfortably
seated at a small table covered by a clean white cloth.
Here it was evident that the teachers had made an effort to
conform to a civilised standard; but the means at their disposal
would not have permitted them to maintain this standard, had
the number of girls been larger.
Infants' Department.
Here the little ones were seated at their desks, which were
covered with brown paper.
