NOTES ON SANITARY WORK,
AND MATTERS INCIDENTAL THERETO.
DUST AND HOUSE REFUSE COLLECTION.
This is carried out by contract, and the total cost per annum
is about £3,000. Each house has its refuse collected twice a week;
the refuse is burnt at the Destructor Works.
The Destructor, besides burning house refuse, is used to burn
a large quantity of pressed sludge from the sewage tanks ; in this
manner during the 12 months ending March 31st, 1909, 8,150 tons
of pressed sludge was so dealt with, in addition to 24,238 tons of
house refuse. During the same period 4,600 tons of pressed sludge
was sent away to various parts of the country for manure.
DAIRIES, COWSHEDS, &c., AND MILK SUPPLY.
The great bulk of the milk is imported. Two cow-keepers
have given up cow-keeping during the year and there are now only
seven cow-keepers in the district; but even these supplement the
home supply. In the cowsheds I insist on the minimum of 800
cubic feet of space to each cow, as prescribed by our bye-laws, and
I try to enforce adequate ventilation and lighting.
