carried out. Enquiries have also been made as to probable
source of infection, Milk supply, Schools attended, the nature of
employment of the inmates, also as to whether any public books,
etc., are on the premises, necessary steps being taken in connection
with the above to prevent the likely spread of disease.
The occupiers are cautioned as to sending infected clothing
to laundries and against taking into the house milk cans belonging
to milk vendors, and here it may be stated that in four
instances cases occurred in milk and provision shops. The
sufferers were removed to the Isolation Hospital, the premises
thoroughly disinfected, and the milk and butter exposed to infection
destroyed, the owners being compensated in two of the cases.
On the convalescence or removal of the sufferers the premises
and bedding, etc., are disinfected under our supervision; the
sanitary arrangements and drains are also inspected, and notices
have been served to carry out the necessary work to remedy
defects, dilapidations, or uncleanly conditions found to exist.
The work of ascertaining that the requirements of these notices
are complied with often entail several visits to the houses and
considerable correspondence.
