Note.—These figures relating to the population as estimated
by the number of inhabited houses, point to remarkable fluctuations,
and raise doubt as to the accuracy in numbering the latter.
On the basis of the number of inhabited houses, the population of
the District showed an increase of 11,382 in the year 1899. The
increase in 1900 only amounted to 5,395, The returns at
Midsummer, 1900, show that in Lewisham there were 1,762 more
occupied houses than there were at Midsummer, 1899, with a
corresponding increase of population amounting to 10,396, while
in Sydenham in 1900 there were 834 more empty houses than
there were in 1899, with a corresponding decrease of population
amounting to 4,922. With such startling variations in so short a
period, it need occasion no surprise if the Census returns of 1901
of the actual population do not agree with the estimated population.
Births.
The registered births in the district in the year 1900, amounted
to 3,245, an increase of 184 on the previous year:—
Males, 1,696. Females, 1,549.=3,245.
Birth-rate to population=23.8 per 1,000.
The birth-rate in England and Wales in 1900 was 28.9 per 1,000
of the population, which is lower than that in any other year on
record.
