OFFICES, SHOPS AND RAILWAY PREMISES ACT. 1963.
This important and far-reaching statute came into force on the 1st
May, 1964, and is in the main to ensure that in premises to which the Act
applies satisfactory conditions are available in relation to the health,
welfare and safety of employees. These conditions include, inter-alia
cleanlineess, prevention of overcrowding, temperature, ventilation, lighting,
sanitary conveniences, washing facilities, drinking water, accommodation
for clothing, seating arrangements, seats for sedentary workers,
eating facilities, safety of floors, passages and stores, fencing of exposed
parts of machinery, first aid, and fire precautions.
A considerable amount of extra work was, therefore, thrown on to
the department in connection with the registration of premises and their
inspection and action in dealing with various contraventions. 153 notices
were served during the year.
The following is a copy of the return submitted to the Ministry of
Labour and National Service for the period 1st May to 31st December,
1964:—
