Rent Act, 1957—Certificates of Disrepair.
The following is a copy of the return under the Rent Act, 1957, to
the Ministry of Housing and Local Government covering the period 1st
January, to 31st December, 1964:—
Part I—Applications for Certificates of Disrepair:

Improvement Grants.
My advise has been submitted to the Council in 70 instances during
the year.
Rehousing—Medical Aspects.
My advice has been sought during the year on some 200 applications
respecting which medical recommendations for priority had been submitted
by hospitals or private practitioners.
Caravans.
The long standing problem of the Lake Avenue site showed signs of
being successfully resolved at the end of the year following the confirmation
by the Minister of Housing and Local Government on the 2nd
September, 1964, of the Hornchurch (Lake Avenue/Thorn Lane) Compulsory
Purchase Order, 1963.
Active steps were being taken at the end of the year for the rehousing
of the caravan dwellers and the storage and eventual disposal
of the caravans.
Land Charges Enquiries.
During the year 4,796 land charges enquiries were referred to the
Department regarding the question of outstanding sanitary notices and/
or certificates of disrepair. Information is also given as to whether or
not a particular property is in a smoke contol area.
This is one of the routine unpublicised but time-consuming occupations
of the Department.
Common Lodging Houses.
There are no registered common lodging houses in the District
