Tuberculosis.
Respiratory: Fifty four new cases were notified during the year as
compared with forty six last year.
Non-Respiratory: These cases were notified as against ten last year.
Inward Transfers: These totalled 38 as against 67 last year possibly
an index of the decreased housing activity here.
Deaths: There were nine this year as compared with one in 1957.
I noted last year that this disease had certainly not been eradicated and
this year's position is not wholly reassuring.
The deaths represent the highest total since 1954 and the number of
deaths from the disease not notified before—5—represented the highest
figure since 1952.
Two deaths occurred within 3 months of notification as against no
similar deaths last year.
It is unwise to generalise on one year alone and the tuberculosis
trend will be watched with interest.
