Land Charges Enquiries.
During the year 3,607 land charges enquiries were referred to the
department regarding the question of outstanding sanitary notices and
Certificates of Disrepair.
This is one of the routine unpublicised but time-consuming occupations
of the department.
Sub-Standard Accommodation.
Our initial programme for dealing with this matter has been largely
completed and was never of major moment.
Central Area Development around High Street has dealt with some
aged property which might well have fallen to my Department to
represent.
Inevitably, however, as time goes on other properties deteriorate and
whilst some can usefully be repaired others appear most suitable for
demolition. The problem of sub-standard property is, therefore, small
but ever recurring. In general individual representation has been utilised
and the persons dispossessed have been sympathetically considered' for
re-housing. I feel most strongly that persons dispossessed as a result of
official representation should—save in very exceptional circumstances—be
offered alternative accommodation. If in occasional instances they prove
bad tenants remedies exist for the situation thereby created.
SECTION E.
INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD AND FOOD
PREMISES
Food and Drugs Administration.
During the year some 294 samples were taken and of these 25 were
unsatisfactory in some particular.
In addition 7 food complaints were submitted to the Public Analyst
with the results noted.
The sub-divisions of the work detailed later relate to: —
(1) Samples submitted to the Public Analyst and
found to be genuine 269
(2) Samples submitted to the Public Analyst and found
to be sub-standard, etc. 25
(3) Food complaints referred to Public Analyst 7
(4) Food complaints not warranting reference to Public
Analyst 44
The programme of sampling followed normal lines. The number of
samples found sub-standard was somewhat higher than last year.
The number of food complaints received was approximately the
same as in 1957.
Inflation may well be regarded as not peculiar to the economic field
