The following is a copy of the Annual Return of Food Poisoning
notifications for the year 1957 which is sent to the Ministry of Health
in accordance with statutory requirements:—

(Salmonella Typhimurium: 2).
(Salmonella Enteritidis: 1).
Diphtheria.
The notified case of diphtheria was in a woman of 49 who after
commencing with influenzal symptoms later developed a throat membrane
without apparent glandular involvement. A C. diphtheriae gravis
infection was ascertained bacteriologically but apparently responded
speedily to treatment as negative swabs were relatively rapidly obtained;
convalescence was slow. The two primary contacts both remained well.
