Our notices concerning the admission of dogs to food shops have
continued to be prominently displayed but I personally feel that this
tends to put the matter scientifically if not apparently somewhat out
of perspective. If all the humans concerned in the multifarious processes
of food manufacture, distribution and preparation become sufficiently
informed of their own responsibilities, then I do not think that
tne role played by the unfortunate canine is likely to be a matter ror
national concern.
Milk Pasteurising Plant.
The plant noted last year has given uniformly satisfactory results
and has thereby relieved my staff of a certain amount of labour and
anxiety. 52 methylene blue and phosphatase test samples were
examined.
There are 13 milk distributors with registered premises in the
district. There are also 13 firms registered as milk distributors in
Hornchurch whose premises are registered in other districts. In
addition 38 shopkeepers are registered for the sale of bottled milk only.
The Milk (Special Designation) (Raw Milk) Regulations
1949-54, and The Milk (Special Designation) (Pasteurised and
Sterilised Milk) Regulations, 1949-53. :

The number of licences issued by the Council during the year was as follows:—

Dealer's (Pasteuriser's)1
Dealer's (Pasteurised)29
Supplementary Pasteurised7
Dealer's Sterilised50
Supplementary Sterilised8
Dealer's Tuberculin Tested19

Milk Sampling.
The 184 samples of milk taken from the dairies and in the streets
during the course of delivery to customers throughout the year were
submitted to the Counties Public Health Laboratories for testing. In
each case a satisfactory report was received.
L.C.C. Children's Home, Hornchurch Road.
We have arranged to keep the Medical Officer of Health of the
L.C.C. informed of the results of testing of milk supplied to these
premises.
School Canteens.
During the year we paid some 60 visits to the local school canteens
and placed our observations thereon at the disposal of the Education
Committee.
Some improvement in the position of the old canteens should be
recorded, and plans for the radical improvement of one of them are
likely one hopes to bear fruit in the near future.
