Illicit Slaughtering.
" Cornsland Farm," Hall Lane, Upminster. On 16th March 1954,
at the request of the Ministry of Food, your Senior Sanitary Inspector
and District Sanitary Inspector visited the above premises and in a
fairly recently constructed concrete shed, approximately 20 ft. X 23 ft.
the following carcase meat and offal was inspected :
6 hind quarters of beef total 3 carcases.
6 forequarters of beef
3 Ox livers.
2 Ox hearts.
3 Ox tongues.
3 Ox tails.
Quantity of fat.
1 Sheep carcase.
The sheep carcase and two of the ox livers were found to be unfit for
human consumption and the remainder was quite satisfactory. The
Ministry of Food officially seized the meat which had been passed as
fit for human consumption and the remainder was surrendered to the
Sanitary Inspectors by the owner, Mr. E. V. Smith of 72, Norwood
Avenue, Romford, and subsequently destroyed.
From information received it transpired that the slaughtering of
the animals had been carried out at these premises which arc not
licensed as a slaughterhouse in accordance with Section 57 of the Food
and Drugs Act 1938. In addition no notification was received from the
owner that the slaughtering was taking placc.
This case was heard at Romford Court on 24th June when the
defendant pleaded guilty. Proceedings were also taken at the same
time by the Ministry of Food and the defendant pleaded guilty in that
case also. Fines totalling £20 were imposed in respect of your prosecutions
and £30 in respect of the Ministry of Food's cases.

manufacture and 251 for the storage and/or sale of ice cream.
Our sampling was decreased from 82 last year to 80 this year.
77 proved satisfactory.
The spelling complexities of our English language would reasonably
be conceded -and not only by foreigners—as formidable.
The list noted below of a particular type of product sampled under
the Food and Drugs Act does not suggest that the path of the present
day child is going to be any easier in this respect than was that of bis
parents :
" Archie Andrews " Choc. Lolly Kreem.
" Choc-Frol " Lolly.
Frostie Frute Lolly.
