INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
Food and Drugs Act Administration.
The sampling of food and drugs has been continued on the basis
of our programme as detailed in my 1951 annual report.
During the past year the Sanitary Inspectors obtained a total of 269
samples of food and drugs (231 food and 38 drugs) of which 20 samples
(16 food and 4 drugs) were found to be unsatisfactory. The particulars
of this work as noted below illustrate not only the results of
the actual sampling but the number and diversity of the food and
drugs which come within our field of supervision.
Sampling of food would appear superficially to have received
more attention than has been given to the sampling of drugs, but
I would emphasize that the National Health Service Executive Committee
for Essex also takes samples of drugs (prescriptions etc.) in
this district under the general medical and pharmaceutical services
provided in accordance with the provisions of the National Health
Service Act, 1946.
In the course of actual sampling the Sanitary Inspectors have
also checked the labelling of food and drugs and other items such as
possible substitution of foods, e.g. sale of smoked cod as smoked ' haddock
'. In no instance was any contravention found.
In reviewing the results of the samples taken by us I feel we can
have confidence in the quality of food and drugs sold in Hornehurch.
