Public Conveniences.
It would seem sensible in this age to provide facilities for personal
washing at these points but the amount of wanton damage done—
probably by a few irresponsibles—is such as to render unreasonable
any recommendation by me to this end.
Pollution of the Thames.
The condition of the river in so far as it might have a bearing on
our local circumstances continues to receive our attention. The problem
is, however, of such a nature that a solution is really possible
only on a long term basis. There is, however, reason to believe that
the authorities principally responsible are fully aware of the position
and quite sympathetic towards our attitude.
Swimming Baths.
General circumstances have not yet made possible the provision
of swimming baths in this area. It may not be essential to the public
health but from a general viewpoint of encouraging physical recreation
especially amongst our younger population and of providing what is
generally regarded as a necessary facility for a town a further plea
should be made for considering seriously the provision of a local swimming
baths just as soon as it can possibly be done. It seems a pity
that in an area of this size your swimmers, potential swimmers and
bathers should have to find a medium for their recreation at such
distances from their homes.
Paddling Pools.
The water from the various paddling pools in the parks is regularly
analysed and the results are satisfactory.
Disinfestation.
Infested effects are, where possible, cyanide treated. Gammexane
is used where cyanide is impracticable.
Considering the overcrowding which exists, known infestations
are not of high proportions. A close liaison is maintained with the
Housing Department so far as concerns Council property.
Rodent Control.
During the year the Sanitary Inspectors and Rodent Operative
made a total of 1,99.5 visits and re-vi.sits and the Rodent Operative
cleared 97 infestations of rats and mice and as a routine measure baited
the Council's refuse tips on a number of occasions.
A nominal charge is made for dealing with infestations as follows:—
Infestation on private premises 2. 6d.
Infestation on business premises 5s. Od.
