SECTION B
GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE
AREA.
Local Health Authority.
My temporary assistance to the Area Medical Officer was continued
and the Local Health Services benefited, I believe, by this
co-ordinated effort.
Care of the Aged.
Local Committees continued enthusiastically to pursue the work.
Cases do arise from time to time where aged persons somewhat infirm
physically and certainly with very strong opinions on hospital treatment
gradually drift into conditions which are an anxiety to all. Very
often friends or relatives give a great deal of time to looking after the
aged but the danger of, for example, an accident through say an overturned
oil lamp or a gas flame is evident.
I believe that encouraging useful activity in the aged is a vital
approach, as the capacity other people regard them as having will so
often be regarded by them as a true reflection of their own value.
Public Health Propaganda.
Apart from utilising the recognised journals which deal with this
subject every opportunity is taken of introducing it into talks to local
organisations. A regular and topical poster display service is carried
on throughout the area. Items of interest are noted for issue by our
Public Relations Committee who maintain a constant press liaison.
Laboratory Facilities.
There is no change in the facilities which continue to serve the
needs of the district.
On exceptional matters recourse is had to the Public Health
Laboratory at Colindale.
Ambulance Service.
The County Ambulance Service maintains a day and night service
at their Ambulance Station in Billet Lane, Hornchurch.
Maternity and Child Welfare.
The Essex County Council maintained clinics at the following
centres throughout the year :—
(i) Westland Avenue, Hornchurch.
(ii) Abbs Cross Lane, Hornchurch.
(iii) Upminster Road, Rainham.
(iv) Athelstan Road, Harold Wood.
(v) St. Laurence Hall, Upminster.
(vi) Kims Hall, Hornchurch Road, Hornchurch.
