The undermentioned samples were found to be unsatisfactory
and resulted in the following action being taken:—
Suet. 3% deficient in fat. Warning letter sent to manufacturer.
Toffee Apples. Consisted entirely of a sugar preparation and
therefore misdescribed as "Toffee Apples". Vendor and
manufacturer informed of misdescription.
Chocolate Sponge Cake. Rodent excreta embedded in chocolate
covering on top surface. Not possible to prove whether contamination
occurred at the bakery or in the home of the
complainant—no legal proceedings taken.
Curry Powder. Contained 40 parts per million of lead (standard
lays down that no curry powder shall contain lead in excess
of 10 parts per million). Retailer instructed to remove this
powder from stock and the wholesale spice merchant and
grinder who manufactured this curry powder was informed
of Analysts' report.
Beef Sausages. Contained 650 parts per million of sulphur
dioxide (standard should not exceed 450 parts per million).
Warning letter sent to butcher who discontinued the use of
preservative in sausages.
