Drainage.
Some four properties were converted from pail to water closet
and sewer at the joint expense of owner and Council.
Disinfestation.
Infested effects are, where possible, cyanide treated. Gammexane
is used where cyanide is impracticable.
Considering the overcrowding which exists, known infestations
are not of high proportions. A close liaison is maintained with the
Housing Department so far as concerns Council property.
Rodent Control.
The Prevention of Damage by Pests Act, 1949, came into force
on 31st March, 1950, and repealed the Eats and Mice (Destruction)
x\ct, 1919. This new Act granted additional powers to local authorities
in dealing with the prevention and eradication of rodent
infestations. During the year the Sanitary Inspectors and Eodent
Operative made a total of 1,954 visits and re-visits and the Eodent
Operative cleared 110 infestations of rats and mice and as a routine
measure baited the Council's refuse tips on a number of occasions.
In one instance it was found necessary to serve a notice under the
Prevention of Damage by Pests Acts, 1949, in order that certain
premises be made rat proof.
A nominal charge is made for dealing with infestations as
follows :—
Infestation on private premises 2s. 6d.
Infestation on business premises 5s. Od.
Sanitary Inspection of the District.
Increased visits to food premises of all kinds and Shops Act
inspections are noteworthy features of the year's work.
