Tuberculosis.
During the year, 127 new cases (63 male and 64 female) of
Tuberculosis were added to the register. These included 109 cases
(56 male and 53 female) in which the respiratory organs were
affected, and 18 cases (7 male and 11 female) in which the infection
was in some other part of the body.
There were 38 deaths from this disease.
The number of notifications for the year showed an increase of
11 as against the figure of the previous year, but the incidence for
1947 approximated to the average for the past 11 years, and 13
fewer deaths from the disease occurred during 1947.
The Tuberculosis register at the end of the year showed as
follows —
Pulmonary—
Males 387
Females 267
Non-Pulmonary—
Males 106
Females 103
Pulmonary and Non-Pulmonary Total 863
The problem of Tuberculosis is quite inseparable from that of
housing, and it is a considerable satisfaction to record alike the very
close collaboration which 1 have with the local Tuberculosis Officer
and the complete sympathy which the Council affords to deserving
cases which I am responsible for bringing to their notice.
