Cesspools.
There are certain areas of the District not at present sewered
and certain others in which the provision of sewers in the future
appears most unlikely. This position is inseparable from any district
with a rural part. Whilst the legislative position for dealing with
overflowing cesspools is straightforward it should be recognised that
every cesspool is a potential nuisance and although it may on
occasions be unavoidable, the provision of cesspools to serve any
house in an urban part of the area is initially to be deprecated and
should subsequently be remedied at the earliest available opportunity.
Rodent Control.
The special scheme outlined in last year's report for the
systematic inspection of the District for rodent infestation in
accordance with Ministry of Food L.A. Circular No. 12 was completed
on the 30th April, 1947, by the 3 Rodent Operatives.
During the period 1st January, 1947, to 30th April, 1947,
14,361 visits were made in this connection and 85 rat and 6 mice
infestations were cleared.
Following completion of the special scheme a Rodent Operative
was oppointed to deal with any further rodent infestations.
He made 1,242 visits and cleared 99 infestations up to the end of the
year, the charges being 2s. 6d. for dealing with infestations on
private premises and 5s. Od. for minor infestations on business
premises.
This service has been much appreciated and has filled a definite
want in these times when food particularly must be saved from
destruction by rodents.
