Provision of New Houses.
To relieve overcrowding and to rehouse families living in houses
on which Demolition Orders had been made the Council built 40
houses during the year on land already in their possession at
Rainham.
As it was found that unusually large and also quite small
families had to be rehoused the Council decided to build some houses
with only one or two bedrooms and others with four or five bedrooms
in addition to the normal three bedroom non-parlour type.

The numbers of each sort are shown in the following table:—

164/- per week.

The houses were planned in blocks of four, each one bedroom
house having a five bedroom house next to it, the additional bedrooms
of the larger house being on the first floor above the one bedroom
house. By this arrangement it will be possible at a future
date if there is no need for a five bedroom house to convert each
pair of five and one bedroom habitations into two three bedroom
houses.
Housing for Members of the Fire Brigade.
During the year the Council built 16 houses near the Fire
Station in Billet Lane to house members of the Fire Brigade.
Information Supplied to Landlords.
Under the Housing Act it is the duty of the Council to supply
to landlords on request the permitted number of persons in relation
to each of their houses.
During the year 1938 this information was supplied for 607
houses which is additional to the 2,599 houses and 1,584 houses in
respect of which the information was supplied during the years
1937 and 1936 respectively.
