2. Laboratory Facilities.
Under arrangements made by the Essex County Council,
sputum, swabs, and pathological specimens are examined by Dr.
E. Suckling, the County Pathologist at the Laboratories, 91 Queen
Victoria Street, London, E.C.4.
Reports on each specimen examined are sent to the practitioner
submitting the sample and to the Medical Officer of Health.
Water, milk, and other foodstuffs are also examined in the
Laboratories.
The specimens examined by the County Bacteriologist during
the year are enumerated in the following table:—
279 throat swabs for diphtheria bacilli (11 positive, 268
negative).
26 nasal swabs (all negative).
278 sputum for tubercle bacilli (50 postive, 228 negative).
28 urine.
9 samples of blood for Widal test (all negative).
7 swabs for hæmolytic streptococci (all negative).
20 hair for ringworm (11 positive, 9 negative)
16 miscellaneous.
