Closet Accommodation.
Throughout the District most of the houses are provided with
water-closets connected to the sewer.
At the beginning of the year there were approximately 360
cesspools which were emptied by the Council. Some of these have
since been abolished in roads where sewers have been laid. The
greatest number of cesspools, approximately 200, are in roads of
estates adjoining Upminster Road, Rainham, where the existing
sewer is somewhat shallow. The sewering of this part of the District
is an engineering problem which is now receiving the attention
of the Council. With the exception of this area, most of the other
cesspools still being used are in isolated parts of the Districts.
Public Cleansing.
The collection and disposal of house refuse are carried out under
the direction of the Surveyor. The Council have a fleet of S.D.
freighters which are closed vehicles with a low loading line.
Refuse is now disposed of by controlled tipping on land which
is under the control of the Council. One area is in the North West
Ward, where low lying land is being covered and levelled with the
ultimate intention of making a public open space. In another part
of the area, low lying ground is being filled up and when completed
will be used as a school playing ground.
Cesspool emptying is carried out by mechanical emptiers and
the contents disposed of on land under the control of the Council.
Sanitary Inspection of the District.
