Shops Act, 1912-1934.
There were 746 shops on the register at the end of 1935; in
37 shops there were changes of tenancy, and 11 premises were
closed.
All the shops were inspected during the year, and the proprietors
advised and instructed as to the provisions of the various
Acts now in force.
In shops where assistants are employed, the Shops Act, 1934,
is operative, especially with regard to assistants under the age
of 18, and in these cases particulars have been obtained as to the
number and sex of assistants, and the number of hours during which
they are employed.
In all shops where junior assistants are employed, the necessary
forms as prescribed by the Shops Act, 1934, are exhibited, and the
provisions contained therein are being satisfactorily complied with.
Attention has also been given to the facilities afforded to the
assistants with regard to sanitary and washing accommodation, and
the general sanitary condition of the shops.
Evening Closing Hours.
Inspections have been carried out during the year in order to
enforce, where necessary, the provisions of the Shops (Hours of
Closing) Act, 1928. In various instances it has been found necessary
to acquaint proprietors of shops of their obligations under this
Act, and warnings have been issued in cases found to be exceeding
the legal hour.
No legal proceedings were taken during the year.
