occasions when they will have to rely on coke which will not burn readily in the
the ordinary grate, and that they should avail themselves of the opportunity of
installing suitable appliances to do so whilst the grant was available. A few
responded to this suggestion, but several are obviously continuing as before.
The area was, however, kept under observation throughout the winter and it is
satisfying to be able to record that not a single contravention of the provisions
of the Act relating to the emission of smoke was noted.
Provisional clearance was given by the Minister of Housing and Local Government
for a 100% survey to be carried out of the Hampstead Garden Suburb Ward, Smoke
Control (No. 2) Area, which is 461 acres in extent and comprises some 2640 properties.
This was nearing completion at the end of the year.
Industrial Premises
224 observations were made by the Public Health Inspectors of chimneys of
industrial or commercial premises in response to complaints or as a result of their
own inspections.
Smoke was found to be emitted on a number of occasions this in each case being
due to failure to maintain or operate the plant properly. As a result of advice given
and informal representations made by the Inspectors the difficulties were overcome
and in no instance was it necessary to take statutory action.
measurement of Atmospheric Pollution
The measurements recorded during the year show a definite improvement on the
the results obtained in the previous year.
