The pool, which is 50 feet in length, 15 feet in width and has a depth of water
varying from 2' 9" to 3' 3", is constructed in reinforced concrete. Its capacity is
14,000 gallons, the source of water-supply being Colne Valley Water Company's mains.
Filtration is by means of a reverse action filter with graded Leighton Buzzard
sand and chlorination by an automatic drip feed ty float.
The turnover period is approximately 8 hours.
9 samples were taken during the year for bacteriological examination. The
earlier samples could not be regarded as satisfactory, but after improved regulation
of the chlorine input the later samples taken were highly satisfactory.
Diseases of Animals Acts
Foot-and-Mouth Disease
On 5 occasions during the year the movement of animals (cattle, sheep, goats,
pigs and deer) became controlled in the Borough as a result of Orders made by the
Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food following the occurrence of outbreaks of
the disease in neighbouring areas. There were 19 stockholders affected by the
restrictions imposed by the Orders. Licences to move animals within the infected
area were granted only in essential cases. In no case was any infringement of the
Orders noted, the stockholders being only too anxious to avoid taking any risks which
might lead to the introduction of the disease to their premises. Some £5!4 million
has been paid out by the Government in compensation to owners of cattle slaughtered
because of foot-and-mouth disease during the past five years.
Swine Fever
No cases of swine fever occurred in or near to the Borough during the year. The
Government has announced that a slaughter policy is to be introduced against this
disease.
Fowl Pest
Two poultry keepers reported the death of birds which they thought might be due
to fowl pest. The carcases were examined when death was found to have been due to
other causes. It was not necessary to impose restrictions on the movement of poultry
in the area during the year.
There are now no poultry slaughterers in the Borough.
