During the year the Department, in the course of routine investigations of the
sources of food poisoning, was able to participate in a study arranged by the
Director of the Colindale Public Health Laboratory into the standards of desiccated
coconut and the findings were reported in a paper*. It was realised though the handling
of desiccated coconut was satisfactory in this country there was room for considerable
improvement in the exporting countries and in the early stages of manufacture.
Shortly afterwards the Chairman of the Desiccated Coconut Association was able
to say that draft regulations were prepared applicable to the manufacture and shipping
of desiccated coconut which should revolutionise the industry.
Paratyphoid Fever
No case of Paratyphoid Fever was notified during the year.
