Sonne Dysentery
There was a decrease in the number of cases notified - 44 compared with 95 in
1959. The disease still continues to be mild in character, but very infectious among
small children.
Typhoid Fever
There was one case of Typhoid Fever notified in Hendon. The patient was a cafe
proprietor who came into contact with a wide variety of nationalities. Stool specimens
were taken from all known contacts, all of which proved negative.
Typhoid is a dangerous disease in food handlers whose standards of hygiene are
low as they can easily pass it on to the consumer, but in this case the standards of
the patient were excellent and this, no doubt, prevented the spread of the disease.
Food Poisoning
During the year 14 cases of food poisoning were notified compared with 36 in
1959. The following is a copy of a report made to the Ministry about the organisms
responsible for the individual and family outbreaks.
