With regard to the samples noted on that list as being unsatisfactory., I add the following comments:—
Cakes. An official caution was addressed to one trader who sold flour confectionery as
"Cream Slice" when the filling was imitation cream.
Drugs. Two samples of tincture of iodine procured from a retailer were found to be slightly
deficient in iodine content. Subsequent samples from the same source were found to be satisfactory
and no further action was taken.
Fruit. A sample of fresh apples was found to bear on the skin a contamination of arsenic
and lead slightly in excess of the very small amount generally permitted. Contamination of this
nature can readily be removed by adequate washing whichv in this case; had not been carried out by
the shopkeeper concerned although, from the knowledge which he had, he should have realised that
such a precaution should have been taken. This matter was dealt with by caution.
A trader was prosecuted for labelling Beurre dJAnjou pears as "William Pears" and also for
selling these pears in response to a purchaser's request for "William Pears". He was fined £5 on
each of two summonses and ordered to pay £3.3,0. costs. Another trader was found committing
similar offences in respect of Packham's Triumph pears ticketted ae and sold as "William Pears".
He also was fined £5 on each of two summonses, together with £3.3.0d. costs.
Merchandise Marks Acts, 1887— 1953. The majority of the inspection work carried out under
the provisions of the above Acts relates to ensuring that the requirements of the various Marking
