CLEAN AIR ACT, 1956
During the course of the year a detailed survey was carried out for the making of a Smoke
Control Area in the north-western part of the Borough, to be known as the Borough of Hendon Smoke
Control (No.l) Order,, 1958. Notices on behalf of the Council were published and posted and appropriate
publicity was given in the area affected by the Order.
Measurement of Atmospheric Pollution
The Smoke Measuring Stations and Deposit Gauge have now been operating for a full year.
The various graphs and tables demonstrate clearly how pollution increases in the winter. The
December measurement shows a six fold increase on June; the important factors are the domestic
fire burning bituminous coal and the calm weather common in November and December, , The Smoke
Measuring Stations are installed in Edgware and Goldets Green Public Libraries and a daily esti
mation of sulphur dioxide in the air is carried out.
At each Smoke Station a measured volume of air is drawn through a filter paper and the
degree of staining of the filter paper compared with a standard scale. The findings obtained are
shown on the graph.
The Deposit Gauge is sited on the roof of a building behind the Town Hall,, and a monthly
measurement is carried out to show the rainfall in millimetres, the amount of water^insoluble
matter expressed in tons per square mile per month, and the amount of water-eoluble deposit
expressed in tons per square mile. ,
