Some of the certificates issued had been applied for late in 1957 and other applications
received late in 1958 were outstanding at the end of the year.
Cinemas and Places of Entertainment and Licensed Houses
During the year 184 inspections were made by the Public Health Inspectors and detailed reports
submitted to the respective licensing authorities.
Smoke Abatement
Number of observations made during the year 209.
A number of complaints were received of individual smoke nuisances. These were all dealt
with informally and in most cases little subsequent trouble was experienced.
Cesspools
A number of houses in the more rural portions of the Borough are drained into cesspools.
These were emptied by the Council on 245 occasions during the year.
insect Pests
Complaints of ants, book-lice, bugs, carpet beetles, clover-mite, cockroaches, crickets,
fleas, flies, furniture mites, larder beetles, silver fish, wasps and woodlice, were all dealt with
during the course of the year by the Public Health Inspectors as part of their normal routine duties,
and advice given on the best means of eradicating the pests and preventing a re-infestation of the
premises.
In the case of bugs and fleas the actual work of disinfestation is carried out by an operative
working under the supervision of the Public Health Inspectors in co-operation with the tenants.
During the year 14 premises were successfully treated for bug infestation and 5 for fleas.
An arrangement exists whereby the Housing Officer notifies the Public Health Department
of the transfer of tenants in Council houses. Inspections are made of furniture, bedding and
accommodation before transfer and disinfestation performed where necessary.
The method employed is the application of a D.D.T. solution in spray form and in the case
of heavy infestation the work is carried out by specialist firms.
Disinfection
Disinfection of rooms by formalin spray is carried out after cases of certain notifiable
infectious diseases and in the case of tuberculosis on request or by arrangement with the Chest
Physician. An arrangement exists with the Regional Hospital Board for the steam disinfection
of bedding and clothing, a charge being made to the Local Authority for this service.
In cases other than notifiable infectious disease the service is carried out on request, an
appropriate charge being made.
