In offering our thanks to these drivers we cannot praise too highly the friendliness and the
willing help which is always forthcoming from them, particularly when conveying blind or disabled
old people.
The satisfactory running of a coach on these lines is not at all easy. We cannot afford to
employ a paid driver and the exacting and complicated schedules to which the volunteer drivers
have to adhere must always present a problem. We realise that club leaders cannot quickly communicate
with their members and every effort is made by the office to avoid last minute changes
or cancellations. We should, however, be concealing the truth if we suggested that "Polly" is
not sometimes a cause for worry.
INFORMATION PAMPHLET
Committee members have received a copy of a small pamphlet which lists and explains the
services which the Committee offers. It gives also particulars of public and voluntary bodies
about which the Old Age Pensioner should know. Criticisms and suggestions for the improvement
of this pamphlet will be welcomed before it goes into print.
THE CONSTITUENT ORGANISATIONS
It had been intended to include a brief report on the activities of each Organisation represented
on the Committee. It was found, however, that this would occupy too much space and it would
have been to a large extent a duplication of facts which are to be found in the Information Pamphlet.
But we would, however, like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Hampstead Garden Suburb
Fellowship on the recent completion of their new Fellowship House — a beautifully appointed club
house in delightful surroundings. This is an event of some importance. : We are very conscious
that the Club at Station Road can be of use only to the limited number of old people who live in the
central part of Hendon. It may well be that similar clubs with their own premises are needed in
other parts of the Borough. This is a question requiring serious consideration. The Committee
would welcome information and suggestions on this subject.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
We are most fortunate in the friendly relations which exist between ourselves and the officials
and staffs of the public bodies with whom we come in contact. Requests for advice or assistance
invariably meet with a most ready response and action is taken, where necessary, with an absolute
minimum of formality.
To the Voluntary Organisation, whose names are far too numerous to mention here,, we offer
our most grateful thanks for all the work which they have carried out in furtherance of the aims of
the Committee during the past year. Their services cover an extensive field which embraces
large scale catering, meals on wheels, escort work, visiting, cinema shows, clubs, outings, entertainment
and countless other activities. In tendering our thanks to the Constituent Organisations
we hope they will always remember that the Committee exists, in part, to be of assistance to them,
and that they will never hesitate to approach us if it is felt that we can be of help.
