responsible for food poisoning, which are now sub-divided into many groups, and this sub-division
often helps in tracing the source of an outbreak. A variety of sources appeared to be responsible
for the several cases of food poisoning which were spread throughout the Borough because, as the
table shows, a number of different types were involved. In one instance organisms of the food
poisoning type were probably the cause of an attack of acute appendicitis.
Salmonella Typhi-Murium —
1 case of Type 1
5 cases of Type 1a
4 cases of Type 2c
4 cases of Type 2d
6 untypable strains several cases were not typed.
Salmonella Stanley — 1 case
Salmonella Anatum — 2 cases
Coagulase positive staphylococci phage pattern 187—2 cases.
The cases were distributed through the year as follows:—

Paratyphoid Fever
No case of paratyphoid fever was notified during the year, compared with 5 cases in 1957.
Diphtheria
No case of Diphtheria was notified during the year.
The following table shows the number of cases and the deaths from diphtheria since immunisation
was introduced on a larjp scale in 1935.
