VITAL STATISTICS
Population.
According to the figure supplied by the Registrar-General the estimated mid-year
population for 1956 was 153,200.
This is 800 less than that for the year 1955 and 2,657 less than the Census
figure for 1951.
Births.
The number of live births recorded during the year increased by 64, 1,998
occurring compared with 1,934 in 1955, giving an increased corrected birth rate of
12.35 per 1,000 Home Population compared with 11.80 last year.
The rate, however, is less than that for the County of Middlesex which is 13.2
and less than that for England and Wales which is 15.7 per 1,000 Home Population.
The number of stillbirths increased from 31 to 38 giving a stillbirth rate of
18.66 per 1,000 total births compared with 15.77 in 1955, The rate for the Borough
of Hendon compares favourably with that for England and Wales which is 23.0 per 1000
total births.
Deaths.
Although there was one death fewer than last year, owing to the fact that there
was a fall in population the corrected death rate of 10.67 per 1,000 Home Population
is higher, but is less than the rate for England and Wales which is 11 7 per 1,000
Home Population and the County of Middlesex which has a corrected death rate of 10.8
per 1,000 Home Population.
Heart and associated diseases again accounted for the largest number of deaths
and second in the principal causes was cancer.
Deaths from motor vehicle and other accidents decreased, 31 people dying from
these causes compared with 43 in 1955.
Eighteen people committed suidde, seven more than last year.
Infantile Mortality,
Thirty-six children died in the first year of life compared with 40 in 1955 giving
an infantile mortality rate of 18 1 per 1,000 live births.
With the exception of the years 1950 and 1953 when the infant mortality rate
was 16, this is the lowest rate ever recorded in the Borough of Hendon.
The rate for the Borough compares most favourably with that for England and
Wales, which at 23.8 per 1,000 related live births is the lowest ever recorded in
this Country, The rate for the County of Middlesex, 19 1 per 1,000 live births, is
higher than that for Hendon.
