POPULATION:
The Registrar-General has estimated the total population
to be 158,200. This figure includes members of the Armed
Forces stationed in the area and is practically identical with
that of the previous year.
BTRTHS:
There were 2,261 registered live births in 1950, as compared
with 2,257 in 1949 giving a birth rate in 1950 of 13.15
as compared with the country generally of 15.8.
STILLBIRTHS:
There were 26 stillbirths in 1950, giving a rate of 0.16 per
1,000 of the population, as compared with 0.37 for England and
Wales.
INFANTILE MORTALITY:
There were only 36 deaths of infants under one year of
age, giving an infantile mortality rate of 15.9 per 1,000 live
births which is the lowest rate which has ever been recorded
for the Borough of Hendon. The corresponding rate for
England and Wales was 29.8.
MATERNAL MORTALITY:
Two women died in 1950, giving a maternal mortality
rate of 0.87 per 1,000 total births, the rate for England and
Wales being 0.86.
DEATHS:
There were 1,501 deaths in 1950, 21 less than in the
previous year.
