The method of estimating the population has been fully
explained in previous annual reports, in which are also stated
my reasons for believing that it is substantially accurate notwithstanding
the large discrepancy between my estimate
and that of the Registrar General.
In 1921 the Census population was 56,013 and the number
of local government electors in the Autumn register was
22,595.
In 1925 the number of local government electors on the
Autumn register was 26,968. Assuming that the number
of electors bore the same proportion to the population in
1925 as it did in 1921, the population in 1925 would be 66,853,
whereas my estimate is 66,922. It will be observed that the
two figures approximate fairly closely.
My estimate is based on the number of occupied houses
in the district and is to a great extent explained by the
following table:—
