SCAVENGING.
The removal of house refuse is undertaken by the Council
with the exception of the Mill Hill portion of the district
where the work is done by a Contractor. Portable metal
dust receptacles are in general use for the reception of dust
pending its removal, which takes place once per week. A
special charge is made for the removal of trade refuseor other
accumulations.
The question of refuse disposal has come in for a great
deal of consideration by the Council during the last five years.
It has been recognised that the present method of disposal,
namely, by means of a dust shoot in the neighbourhood of
the Welsh Harp was not satisfactory, but the high cost of
more satisfactory methods has led to postponement of the
adoption of another system. It has finally been decided to
deal with the refuse by means of a Refuse Plant of modern
type. Application has been made to the Ministry of Health
for sanction for the raising of the necessary loan and a Public
Local Inquiry has been held. It is hoped that the Ministry's
sanction will be received shortly so that this important work
may be put in hand as soon as possible.
