Of the 29 in the Workhouse only 8 are chargeable to the
Hendon District. Deducting the other 21, it leaves 541 to be
accounted for in Hendon Parish proper. This is equal to a birthrate
of 25.9 per 1,000, as against 29.5 in the previous year.

ZYMOTIC DISEASES.
scarlet fever.
This disease has been very prevalent during the year in Central
Hendon : 79 cases being notified as against 4 in the previous
year and 108 in 1S96. This was mainly due to undetected cases
parading the streets and attending the schools. Fourteen cases
occurred in West Hendon, 13 in Child's Hill, 3 only from Cricklewood,
2 from Mill Hill, and none from Burnt Oak, Temple Fortune,
or any institution.
Scarlet Fever in Central Hendon.—This part of the parish has
been visited by a very severe epidemic, and has formed the subject
of more than one special report to the Council. The first outbreak
occurred in the early months of the year, and on investigation
proved to have affected mainly the scholars of a private
school. This school was closed on my recommendation, and the
