The ten-year programme to cover the whole district with
Smoke Control Areas is nearing completion Smoke Control Orders
have been made for 90% of the area and 80% of the dwellings in
the district. Any visible smoke from industrial premises is so
unusual as to call for comment and investigation, According to
figures published by the Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research the degree of pollution in the district is now as good
as or better than many small non-industrial towns with a reputation
for salubriousness.
This is a picture of a busy industrial town, clean, pleasant
and well-run which can, thanks to a progressive Council and a
keen hardworking staff enter the new consortium with its head
held high.
