Successful proceedings under the Section were taken against
a car breaker who, after stripping everything of value from a
vehicle would set fire to it and cause dense black smoke.
(j) Measurement of Atmospheric Pollution.
Three stations for the measurement of atmospheric pollution
by the daily volumetric method are in use. The pollutants
measured are smoke and sulphur dioxide,
Contrary to the national trend, sulphur pollution in the
District has for several years been falling slightly. Last
year however, this position was not wholly maintained; in some
months the figures at some of the measuring stations were higher
than in previous years.
A change in the technique of measuring smoke pollution
(the use, during the winter months of a 2 in. clamp instead of
a 1 in.) carried out at the suggestion of the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research made comparison with previous
years difficult and it is probably advisable to defer comment
until next year.
