milk fat, but the sample was from one churn, and the remainder
of the churns sent at the same time by the farmer concerned,
were satisfactory, and the quality of the bulked milk was of
satisfactory standard. For this reason no action was taken in
respect of the incorrect sample. Two instances were found of
Clementines which were claimed by means of labels on the stacks
to be "seedless". In respect of one of these stacks the greengrocer
concerned was prosecuted, and fined six pounds, together
with three guineas towards the costs, for selling Clementines
described as seedless which were found to contain an average of
twenty pips in each fruit. A letter of warning was sent to the
importers of dried apricots which were found on analysis to
contain sulphur dioxide (a preservative) the presence of which
must be declared on the label. The quantity of sulphur dioxide
was less than that permitted by the Regulations and the sample
would have been satisfactory had the presence of preservative
been declared.
