More than 10,000 leaflets were distributed in proposed and
actual Smoke Control Areas. These leaflets are supplied free
of charge by the Ministry, the Coal Utilisation Council, Solid
Smokeless Fuels Federation, the North Thames Gas Board and the
Southern Electricity Board.
(1) South Best Middlesex Clean Air Co-ordinating Committee.
Three meetings of the Committee were held during the year
and the range of topics discussed included: - height of chimneys,
price of solid smokeless fuel in paper bags, moisture in solid
smokeless fuel, prior approval of furnaces, smoke warning systems,
sale of coal in smoke control areas, clean air and fog,
and solid smokeless fuel delivery difficulties.
A standard set of conditions to be complied with before
new furnaces are given prior approval under Section 3 of the
Clean Air Act was agreed and subsequently adopted by each of
the constituent authorities.
The future of the Committee came under discussion and it
was unanimously decided that it was serving a useful purpose
and should continue in existence. All other Local Authorities
who would, under the plan for London Local Government Re-organisation,
become associated with the existing members, were
invited to join the Committee and all but two accepted the
invit ation.
By the end of the year the following authorities with a
Population of 654,990 and an area of 40,050 acres were represented
on the revitalised Committee:-

Ealing Borough Council
Felthara Urban District Council
Hayes & Harlington Urban District Council
Heston & Isleworth Borough Council
Uuislip-Northwood Urban District Council
Southall Borough Council
