decided to allocate medical joints for other conditions in
addition to tuberculosis and consideration is now given to the
amount and severity of the disability and to its expected duration.
The application of these principles seems to be working
fairly smoothly, but it is too soon yet to be able to assess any
overall benefit to the community.
The problem of radiation hazards is concerning public
health workers more and more and there have been several discussion
sessions on the subject during the year. At present
control is exercised on a national level and Medical Officers of
Health have no official knowledge of the nature and extent of
radio-active material used within the boundaries for which they
are responsible. Furthermore, public health workers are very
conscious of their ignorance about radiation but in answer to
the demand, courses on radio-activity are now being organised
in various parts of the country. Arrangements have been made
for two Public Health Inspectors and myself to attend such
courses to be held locally early in 1961.
During 1960 a Home Safety Committee was set up as an off
shoot of the local Council of Social Service. It is a purely
voluntary body but includes Council representatives among its
members, and I attend the meetings in an advisory capacity.
Home Safety has tended to be a Cinderella in safety campaigns,
but it deserves to receive more attention. Three deaths occurred
in the current year following accidents in the home, but the
total number of accidents can only be guessed at. Generally
speaking it is a tragedy that people will not spend the few
extra shillings which would buy a satisfactory fireguard for
instance, or a flame-proof garment, while a locking cupboard in
which to keep attractive looking but poisonous medicines, should
be an essential in all homes.
I should like to take this opportunity of thanking the
members of the Council and Especially of the Public Health
Committee for their support and co-operation during the year.
I am, Mr. Chairman, ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
V. SHAW
Medical Officer of Health.
