The Inspection of Meat and Other Foods.
The Slaughterhouse report, made to the Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries & Food under the Slaughterhouse (Reports)
Direction, 1959, was submitted to, and formally accepted by the
Minister. Subsequently the Minister made Orders (S.1s Nos.
2154 & 2155 - 1960) appointing 1st January, 1961 as the date
from which all slaughterhouses in the district must comply with
the construction regulations contained in the Slaughterhouse
(Hygiene) Regulations, 1958 and the Slaughter of Animals (Prevention
of Cruelty) Regulations, 1958.
The practical effect of these Orders will probably be that
the only licensed slaughterhouse in the district will fail to
qualify for renewal of its licence.
This slaughterhouse was not used at all during the year and
consequently the usual table showing the number of carcases and
offal inspected and condemned is a "nil" return.
Byelaws relating to sanitary conditions and management of
private slaughterhouses are in force in the district. They are
based on the Model Byelaws but improve on them by making provision
for (a) hanging accommodation for meat outside the
slaughtering or dressing room (b) covered accommodation for the
storage of manure (c) the taking of all reasonable precautions
to prevent access by domestic birds or animals not intended for
slaughter into slaughterhouses.
Two slaughtermen's licences were issued.
