The number of informal notices served was less than half
the number served last year. Whilst the number arising from
complaints has remained steady the number attributable to our
own initiative has fallen considerably and is a direct result
of the low number of routine visits made by the Public Health
Inspectors.
Legal Proceedings.
Food and Drugs Act, 1955.
(i) Proceedings under Section 2 for selling bread containing
a quantity of charred material were taken against a local baker.
The case was found proved but an absolute discharge was granted
on payment of £3. 3. Od. costs.
(ii) Proceedings under The Milk & Dairies Regulations 1959
were taken against a national dairy company for using a milk
bottle that was not in a state of thorough cleanliness. A fine
of £5 was imposed with 10/6d. costs.
Clean Air Act, 1956.
(iii) Proceedings under the Dark Smoke (Permitted Periods)
Regulations were taken against a local company for emitting
black smoke from their boiler house chimney for a longer period
of time than that permitted by the Regulations. In addition the
company was charged with installing a furnace not capable of
being operated continuously without emitting smoke, in contravention
of Section 3(1) of the Act. The company was fined £5 on
each summons and ordered to pay £3. 3. Od. costs.
