In this district the Public Health Department carries out
constant supervision of shops and other premises where food is
handled. Much is voluntarily surrendered as unfit for human
consumption, advice is proffered (and taken) regarding precautions
necessary, facilities available, and so on, to reduce the risk of
contamination of food by undesirable material. In addition, talks
and lectures are given to firms and interested organisations on the
risks attached to handling of food, and the ways in which these
risks may be avoided.
The absence of a major outbreak should not be a matter for
complacency but only thankfulness, and constant attention should
be given to the matter by everyone, whether or not they are actually
engaged in handling food.
I am, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
V. SHAW,
Medical Officer of Health.
