The Hygiene Exhibition held in conjunction with the Town
Fete on the 6th June was sponsored by the Food Hygiene Guild.
In previous years it has been disappointing to report very small
attendances at public meetings and film shows arranged in support
of the food hygiene campaign. It is therefore very pleasant to
report that this exhibition, a "one-day stand" held in a large
marquee in the Town Hall Park, was an outstanding success. The
official estimate of the number of people at the Fete was 50,000 and
it is conservatively estimated that 15,000 passed through the
Hygiene Exhibition. The exhibits dealt with Clean Milk, Rodent
Control, Insect Control, Food Hygiene, and the Inspection and
Sampling of Food. Films were shown throughout the day.
During the year food hygiene propaganda posters, obtained
from the Central Council for Health Education, have been posted
on the Council's notice boards in all parts of the district and changed
at regular intervals.
(g) Clean Food Handbook.
During the year the production of a Clean Food Handbook was
sponsored by the Food Hygiene Guild. The handbook was well
printed on art paper and was produced by a firm of commercial
advertising agents at no cost to the Guild. The handbook described
the sources and spread of food poisoning and gave advice on the
correct methods of handling, preparing and storing foodstuffs.
Three thousand copies were printed and distributed to the general
public through Guild Members.
(.h) Sampling of Food and Drugs.
The sampling of food and drugs for chemical analysis is carried
out by the Middlesex County Council and the following information
regarding samples obtained during the year has been kindly
supplied by the Senior Public Control Officer :
339 samples were taken, including 199 of milk ; 19 (12 of
which were milk) were found to be unsatisfactory. Successful
proceedings were taken in one instance, the other cases
being dealt with by cautions to the traders concerned.
(*) Food Poisoning.
There was no case of food poisonine notified during the vear.
