RODENT CONTROL
Two whole-time rodent operators are employed. Treatment
is carried out in accordance with the methods suggested by the
Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A charge to cover labour
and cost of materials is made for work done in business premises
but all treatment at dwelling houses is free.
During the year 409 dwelling houses and 124 business premises
were treated and also many ditches, undeveloped sites, etc. The
most outstanding development in this work during the year was
the introduction of a new poison known as "Warfarin" which
can be used without pre-baiting. When further experience in its
use has been obtained it should be possible to reduce considerably
the labour costs of rodent control.
SHOPS ACTS
All parts of the Shops Acts are administered, including hours
of closing, assistants' half-holiday, Sunday trading, comfort and
welfare of assistants, etc. The Sanitary Inspectors made 2,383
visits for this purpose during the year, including 1,063 which were
made outside normal office hours, i.e. in the evenings and on
Sundays.
