New mains have been provided to supply the new houses
which have been erected during the year. The water supply is
of good quality and adequate in amount.
Following a conference between this authority and five neighbouring
ones, it was arranged that samples should be taken
every quarter by each Council served by the South West Suburban
Water Company. The reports are then circulated to each
of the six authorities and the result is that bacteriological and
chemical reports, together with a report on the hardness, of
this water are obtained every fortnight.
Drainage and Sewerage.—There has been no important
extension of sewers during the year. All new houses have been
connected to the sewer and the whole of the sewage from the
area is received and treated at the County works, Mogden.
Rivers and Streams.—No action has been taken in
connexion with the pollution of rivers and streams.
Closet Accommodation.—Twenty-seven pail-closets have
been abolished during the year and eleven cesspools discontinued.
As some of these cesspools served more than one house, the
number of houses connected to the sewer is greater than the
number of cesspools discontinued. The estimated number of
the various types remaining at the end of 1938 is:—
Water-closets 15,374
Closets with movable receptacles 157
Closets with fixed receptacles 13
Public Cleansing.—There are six freighters which are used
for collection of house refuse.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF AREA.

to the following matters, viz.:—
Choked and defective drains 24
Insanitary or dilapidated condition of houses and premises 114
