Sewerage & Sewage Disposal
The Greater London Council Department of Public Health
Engineering state that no extensions or improvements to the
existing plant at Riverside Treatment Works were carried out
during the year, but the plant continued to operate to a satisfactory
standard.
The Eastern Outfall Works, now known as Bury Farm Works,
continued to produce a high quality effluent throughout the year.
The present arrangements for domestic sewage disposal are
adequate, although modifications to the domestic plant will be
started in February, 1971 to enable this plant to cope with increasing
loads.
As a result of experimental work carried out during 1969
a biological plant for the treatment of trade sewage is now being
designed. Complaints from the public regarding an intermittent
smell attributed to the works were received during the course of
the year. Investigation has indicated that a trade effluent discharged
to the domestic sewer is reacting with domestic sewage
to produce the offending smell.
Action has been taken to prevent this trade effluent from
being discharged to the domestic sewer.
The following schedule gives details of new sewers laid
